Happy New Year!

Fun Facts about the Times Square Ball Drop:
  • The Ball that drops in New York City's Times Square each year weighs nearly 12,000 pounds. It's covered in about 2,700 crystal triangles, according to the Times Square website.
  • This version of the Ball is the seventh since the tradition started in 1907. The first Ball weighed only 700 pounds.
  • The Ball has dropped every year since 1907 except for two: 1942 and 1943, during World War II, according to the site.
  • About 1 million people are expected to turn out in Times Square for the celebrations this year. Roughly a fifth of them will be visiting from another country, according to the event's website.
  • More than 100 million Americans will watch the New York City bash on TV. In total, about 56 percent of people in the U.S. will see the Times Square event. The Ball Drop will appear on TV sets outside North America, as well. Broadcasters in Spain, China, Germany, Japan, Portugal, Venezuela and other countries will show the event, according to its website.
  • Afterward, more than 50 dedicated sanitation workers will clean up the area for the next morning.

The top 10 resolutions are usually to lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, get more organized, be more patient, find a better job and to just be a better person over all.

One of the benefits of having the LegalShield membership is that you get up to 50 hours of a tax attorney's time (which is as high as $500 an hour). With that being said, there is still time to include your 2014 tax return with the LegalShield protection.  (Deadline is December 31st.)

Waiting until 2016 to sign up for the membership will eliminate 2014 coverage.

All OF US are susceptible to identity thieves ALL THE TIME. However, the threat of identity theft is HUGE between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  The following is a list of some of the reasons we are more exposed during the holidays:
  • Influx of seasonal workers in retail stores (without background checks)
  • We use our credit cards more frequently
  • We may use a credit card we haven't used in a while
  • We apply for retail store credit cards (to obtain the 10% or 20% discount)
  • We bargain shop on unfamiliar websites to get the best deal
  • We shop online more to avoid the crowds
  • We use unsecured internet connections while traveling
  • Crowded stores make it easier for a pickpocket to lift our wallet
  • We may misplace or lose our smart phone
  • We get and receive more mail through the US Postal Service
IDShield is the best way to protect your identity. And, if you become a victim of identity theft, we will spend up to $5 million to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to restore your identity to pre-theft status. Guaranteed.

Worry Less.  Live More.

Attention Android Users: New Android exploit can hack any handset in one shot

Hackers have discovered a critical exploit in Chrome for Android reportedly capable of compromising virtually every version of Android running the latest Chrome. Quihoo 360 researcher Guang Gong demonstrated the vulnerability to the PSN2OWN panel at the PacSec conference in Tokyo yesterday. While the inner workings of the exploit are still largely under wraps, we do know that it leverages JavaScript v8 to gain full administrative access to the victim's phone.
"The impressive thing about Guang's exploit is that it was one shot; most people these days have to exploit several vulnerabilities to get privileged access and load software without interaction," PacSec organiser Dragos Ruiu told Vulture South. "As soon as the phone accessed the website the JavaScript v8 vulnerability in Chrome was used to install an arbitrary application (in this case a BMX Bike game) without any user interaction to demonstrate complete control of the phone." Unfortunately, real-world applications would be far less benign. Google has already been alerted to the bug and is expected to pay out a sizeable bounty for the heads up.

I’m Immune To Identity Theft

I’ve have several individuals tell me they are IMMUNE to identity theft and that identity theft will not happen to them. (God bless them.)  But, even though we can take many precautions to protect ourselves from identity thieves, it is never possible to be fully immune to identity theft.
First of all, these individuals need to know that identity theft is SO much more than a stolen credit card. To discover unauthorized purchases on your credit card is upsetting and inconvenient, however, it is relatively easy to fix.  Many credit card companies have a liability limit of $50.  So, if a thief has charged thousands of dollars to your card, you may have to pay $50 to the credit card company.  But, more often than not, a credit card company simply wipes out any charges that are the result of the credit card fraud. So, I totally understand why many people think they do not need an identity protection and restoration service.

REAL identity theft, on the other hand, is when a BAD person uses the ACTUAL IDENTITY of WHO YOU ARE.  This includes using YOUR social security number to secure employment or file a false tax return, using YOUR health insurance information and pretending to be you at the doctor or pharmacy, using YOUR identity when committing a crime, or using YOUR driver’s license, making an absolute mess of your REAL life when you realize you are a victim.
You could find out you are a victim of identity theft when you are being arrested for crimes you did NOT commit, being harassed by collection agencies for debts that are NOT yours, or NOT getting a job because your background check shows an outstanding warrant for your arrest in another state you’ve never visited.
HOW would you handle these situations?  WHERE would you begin?  HOW do you prove YOU did NOT commit these crimes?  And, WHY would you want to unravel this mess on your own?  REAL identity theft can cost the victim thousands of dollars and take years to clean up.
You do not need to go it alone.  IDShield, a division of LegalShield, provides identity protection to more than a million people in 50 states and 4 Canadian provinces.  No other company combines the expertise of the most knowledgeable identity protection specialists in the industry with an exclusive partnership with Kroll, the worldwide leader in theft investigation services.  24/7/365 days a year, our team does whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to keep you and your family safe.

Higher Risks of Identity Theft!

A major life event puts you at higher risk of Identity Theft....

In the past year, have you bought a house, sold a house, gotten married, gotten divorced, had a child, become pregnant, lost your job, or gotten a new one?
All of these major life events have one thing in common: you're sharing more personal information than you normally would.
Take buying or selling a house, for instance. Your paperwork passes through the hands of multiple agents and representatives.
Those documents might include your Social Security number, date of birth, passport number, or copies of your driver's license — all information that can be used to steal your identity.
You may not be able to avoid giving away that kind of personal information in a real-estate transaction, but it's always worth asking if providing your Social Security number, for instance, is really necessary.
A lot of people think that just because they've been asked for information, they have to provide it. Before automatically giving it away, ask why. A lot of times, they won't have an answer. And maybe you'll be encouraging them to change their security standards.
Researchers have found that just about any major life change comes with the danger of identity theft:

  • Homebuyers are nearly three times as likely to be a victim of identity theft as the average person
  • Sellers are almost four times as likely.
  • Your risk of getting your identity stolen is approximately 3.5 times higher if you've been married in the past year.
  • Having a child or becoming pregnant increases the risk of identity theft by approximately 2.7 times.
  • Either losing or starting a new job raises your risk of identity theft by approximately 50%.
  • People who have gotten divorced or become separated in the past 12 months are approximately 3.5 times more likely to experience identity theft.
Often, it's not a data breach that puts your personal information out in the open — it's what you've posted yourself. Engaged couples often include details like where they live or where they're going on honeymoon on their wedding websites, and new parents share their children's full names and birth dates on Facebook. There's also the risk of unintentionally exposing your personal data when you use public Wi-Fi networks to apply for jobs, shop online, or check dating websites.
So whether it's a form at the doctor's office that asks for your Social Security number or a website that wants to know your birth date, stop and think before you give that information away.
People need to take active ownership in protecting themselves.
Get Protected Today with IDShield...
For only $9.95/month ($19.95/month for a family plan), IDShield is the best way to protect your identity.  And, if you become a victim of identity theft, we will spend up to $5 million to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to restore your identity to pre-theft status. Guaranteed.
